A former co-worker and friend of mine recently had a baby girl. Once I knew what she was having I asked if there was a theme or color she would like for her blanket. The answer: ducks. I spent the next couple of weeks searcing the Internet for a cute duck based crochet pattern I could use. When I did finally find one I liked, it was knit. I don’t knit. I have crocheted for several years, but never considered knitting. After searching for another few weeks and not finding anything I liked better, I decided it was time to learn.

I found a learn to knit book, picked up some yarn and needles, and went to it. Eventually, and with some help from my Dad, I got the hang of the basic knit and purl stitches. I dove in. What had I got myself into? This was patterned, with the color changing several times per row, and far from simple. Around the third time I tore the blanket apart, because I had messed up somewhere I couldn’t fix, I realized I didn’t have time to keep starting over. Could I adapt the pattern and just crochet it? Could I use the graphed chart and make it work somehow?

I finished the blanket just days before the baby shower, and was very pleased with the result:

Yesterday was our 3rd anniversary. Being an odd year, it was my turn to plan everything. Since I just got over the flu I wasn’t planning much, dinner and a quiet night at home. I got someone to cover our apartment phone so we could just take the night off, and spent all day trying to decide where to go for dinner. We typically eat at Ottavios, but I really wasn’t feeling it this year. By the time I left work I still hadn’t decided, and attributed a lot of it to the fact that I had not been eating much for the last week and didn’t have much appetite. Kish picked me up from work, and we headed home to discuss.
I walked in the door to find a trail of rose petals spread down the hall leading to the bathroom and then bedroom. I was quite surprised, since I know it wasn’t there at lunch (I’d stopped to pick something up), and Kish had been at work all afternoon because we were chatting. Suspiciously I walked down the hall to the bedroom and found the most beautiful display of affection waiting. Kish had made the bed, laid red roses in the shape of a heart with a small white bear in the center holding a bouquet of yellow/orange roses. I was so shocked! It was absolutely perfect. My sweet husband had spent the last week waiting on me hand and foot while I was ill, and even though it was my turn to take care of our anniversary celebration, then gone out of his way to create something so perfect for me.
After just standing there in awe for several minutes, I was encouraged to go see the bathroom. Another wonderful surprise. A bathtub filled with more rose petals, and lined with lavender scented candles. I looked at my husband in awe, when did he have time to do this? After a long time of holding him and asking when he finally told me he had left work early and just made it look like he was still there chatting with me (wonders of technology).
For the longest time all I could do was hug Kish, but eventually we decided on Asuka for dinner, and a quiet walk around the park where we were married before coming home. The night was perfect. We had the entire Hibachi grill to ourselves, and the Filet Mignon couldn’t have been more melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The weather wasn’t too cold, and we got to feed several ducks at the park, they were so anxious for the bread they would even almost beg for it! When we got home, Kish filled the bath with salts, lit the candles, and left me to enjoy it for over an hour.
It was the most wonderful anniversary I could have asked for, and I never even implied! I am very blessed to have such a wonderful and devoted husband.

Back to work today after a 5 day weekend. The plan was to go camping Saturday through Monday, and then for me to spend Tuesday & Wednesday relaxing and taking care of some things at home. At least the camping happened with only a few minor hiccups…
Saturday we got kind of a late start, but still made it up the mountain with plenty of time to get set up and relax in the hammocks for a while before dark. We had hoped to be completely alone on the property, especially considering the time of year, and were disappointed to find another tent set up back off a ways from the main camping area. My mother’s cousin Quinton designated that area years ago as his own, and since there were no cars or people around we hoped it was him and not some stranger we would have to kick off the property when they returned. Fortunately for us, no one arrived that evening. We spend the majority of the evening laying the hammocks and reading, until one of the hammocks dumped me on the ground, spraining my neck and causing pain and stiffness in all my right-side joints. I decided it was time for bed.
Sunday morning was a bit chilly, but bright and beautiful. We had only been out and reading for about an hour when about 5 cars pulled up onto the property. It was Quinton, his wife, and a bunch of friends. Quinton came over and informed us that my entire family would be coming up shortly for the afternoon. So much for our quiet weekend. Now, I must say I wasn’t completely disappointed with Quinton being there, it had been around 11 years since the last time I had seen him, and he was always quite entertaining. In the end, we all kept to ourselves except for meal times (Quint’s MIL made the most delicious Tri-Tip Steaks for dinner Sunday night), and had a rather enjoyable time.
We arrived home late Monday evening, having once again spent all day relaxing in hammocks and reading, and were very grateful for our shower and comfortable bed. Sleeping on the air-mattress had not been pleasant after my fall Saturday.
Tuesday Brett had to return to work, and I had to run in to work for just a few minutes to get payroll done. While at work I checked on my bank account to make sure I could run and get groceries before going home. Much to my surprise, I had less than $50. Apparently I dropped my debit card somewhere between the storage unit and home Saturday morning, and whoever found it decided it would be a good idea to spend over $200 at the local gas station while I was out of town. So I got to spend all of Tuesday working with my Credit Union to try to get that resolved. Wednesday morning started out great. I went to the chiropractor and got a massage, and I get to go back Friday for more because of my neck. While at the chiropractor my phone rang a couple of times, my mom left a message. Something had happened with my sister’s apartment, trouble with the roommates, and we needed to get her moved out right away. Of course, since she’s my assistant, she was working while I had the day off. So, I spent my vacation days at home trying to figure out how to get my bank account settled, and moving my sister.
At least I’ve finally figured out how to take days off work. Maybe next time I’ll actually get the vacation..?

I’ve been keeping the little bit of downtime I have, between people knocking on my door all night, and my other ‘normal’ job, occupied with crochet. In the last 2 months I have created 3 baby blankets, 2 of which have a full outfit set to accompany them, and several smaller pieces. I am also in the process of another baby blanket. All of these are gifts for family, friends, and co-workers. Last night as I was finishing up the 2nd set for my sister-in-law, I decided that I really wanted to show off my work. Unfortunately, the 2 people the sets are for read this website, so I’ll have to wait until sometime in August before I can post those pictures, in the meantime, here is the blanket I made for a girl here at work who is having a baby girl in early August:

And I find myself with less and less of it every day. So I look back and find it’s been another 7 months since my last post, and you are probably all wondering what’s become of me. Fortunately, my most recent news ties in nicely to my last post As you’ve heard, Kishkumen’s company recently moved to a new building. This means that the trip we took to Santa Monica in October has provided him with valuable experience in moving the lab equipment that they just moved. In addition, some of the people we helped move in October came out to lend a hand here.

As to what is keeping me so busy, I am still managing that apartment complex from 9-6 every day. This time of year all of the students have gone home for the summer, which means I spend all of my time trying to fill the apartments they left. At least this time of year everyone around here is getting married which makes it a little easier for me. Kishkumen and I also just moved in February, and in doing so took the job of Resident Managers at another apartment compex, this one with 920 single college students, so that keeps me busy at night. We decided its a good thing we never go out, because we would be getting phone calls the whole time we are away.

We still keep ourselves entertained. Our DVD collection has grown significantly, and our entertainment center continues to improve right along with it. We’ve most recently updated to a Sony Bravia 46″.
